Dallas Bar Association Dedicates 25th & 26th Habitat for Humanity Houses

Tuesday, July 19, 2016

The Dallas Bar Association dedicated its 25th and 26th houses for Habitat for Humanity this summer. The Dallas Bar Association began building Habitat homes in 1991 and is the longest running whole-house sponsor in Dallas.

“The DBA has built a Habitat for Humanity house for the past 24 years,” said DBA President Jerry Alexander, of Passman & Jones, P.C. “This year, through the generosity of AT&T, as arranged by its Senior Executive Vice President and General Counsel David McAtee and the AT&T legal department, the DBA was able also to build AT&T/DBA house—a second Habitat for Humanity House on the same block as the 25th anniversary house!

“Mr. McAtee arranged for a generous donation from AT&T to help cover the costs of construction,” continued Mr. Alexander, “and the AT&T legal department provided some very enthusiastic labor in order to positively impact the life of a Dallas family, which is now on its way to home ownership.”

The DBA normally raises funds for, and builds, one house per year. This year, in honor of building its 25th Habitat home, the DBA has partnered with AT&T to build not one, but two Habitat homes.

This year’s donors for the 25th anniversary Habitat House include:

·         Platinum Hard Hat ($17,000+): Gardere Wynne Sewell LLP

·         Gold Hard Hats ($5,000): Anonymous; Dentons; Thompson & Knight LLP

·         Silver Hard Hats ($3,000-$4,999): Cozen O’Connor; Energy Future Holdings; Kane Russell Coleman & Logan, PC; Vinson & Elkins LLP

·         Bronze Hard Hats($1,500-$2,999): Akin Gump Hauer & Feld LLP; Austin Industries;  Charles and Jane Beach; Canterbury, Gooch, Surratt, Shapiro, Stein & Gaswirth, P.C.; DBA Bankruptcy & Commercial Law Section; DBA Corporate Counsel Section;  Griffith Davison & Shurtleff, P.C.; Haynes and Boone, LLP; John C. Ford Inn of Court;  McGuire, Craddock & Strother, P.C.; McGuireWoods LLP; Munsch Hardt Kopf & Harr PC; Nixon Jach Hubbard, PLLC; Peckar & Abramson, P.C.; Slates Harwell; Strasburger & Price, LLP; Strategic Construction; Stuber Cooper Voge PLLC; Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP; Winstead PC

The Dallas Bar Association Home Project Committee coordinates the build and is led by co-chairs David Fisk, of Kane Russell Coleman & Logan PC, and Ethan Minshull, of Wick Phillips.

Volunteer attorneys carry the torch, making the project what it is today: a coordinated effort by hundreds of Dallas attorneys that give their time and money to support the cause of affordable, decent housing. The central theme is that no commitment of time or money is too small; every hour and every dollar make a difference.
