The Dallas Bar Association (DBA) accepted several awards for its programs and services at the State Bar of Texas (SBOT) Annual Meeting in Fort Worth, Texas.
The State Bar’s Local Bar Services Committee selected the DBA as the recipient of the Star of Achievement Award for its program “And Justice for All: Pro Bono Week,” which included local continuing legal education classes and events that promoted involvement and participation during National Pro Bono Week. The DBA was also recognized with the Deborah G. Hankinson Award for its commitment to access to justice and raising over $1 million for pro bono legal services in Dallas.
Additionally, Headnotes, the official newsletter of the DBA, received two Star of Achievement Awards for outstanding articles written by DBA members and published in Headnotes:
- Best News Article: Patricia Freshwater, of Schwamkrug, Freshwater & Lopez, PLLC
- Best Series of General Interest Articles: Billie J. Ellis, of Locke Lord LLP, and William T. Ellis, of The Law Office of William T. Ellis.
The awards are presented by the State Bar of Texas to recognize local bar associations for outstanding community involvement, commitment to increasing access to justice and dedication to the profession. The publication awards honor exceptional reporting, originality, and impact on the legal profession.
Various DBA members received individual awards at the annual meeting, including:

· John G. Browning, of Passman & Jones, P.C., received Lola Wright Foundation Award, presented by Texas Bar Foundation; and a SBOT Certificate of Merit
· Aaron J. Burke, of Hartline Dacus Barger Dreyer LLP, received TYLA President’s Award
· Aaron T. Capps, of Griffith Davison & Shurtleff, PC, received TYLA President’s Award of Merit
· Chief Justice Carolyn Wright, of Fifth District Court of Appeals, received a Certificate of Merit, presented by the SBOT
· Kelly Chen, of Munck Wilson Mandala, LLP, and Chris M. Kang, of Haynes and Boone, LLP, received Best Lawyers Under 40, presented by SBOT Asian Pacific Interest Section
· Nina Cortell, of Haynes and Boone, LLP, received Gregory S. Coleman Outstanding Appellate Lawyers, presented by Texas Bar Foundation
· Dawn Fowler, of Dawn E. Fowler, P.C., received Ken Fuller Pro Bono Award, presented by SBOT Family Law Section
· Sean T. Hamada, of Carter Scholer Arnett Hamada & Mockler, PLLC, received Outstanding Mentor, presented by SBOT Asian Pacific Interest Section
· Robin P. Hartmann, of Haynes and Boone, LLP, received Distinguished Counselor Award, presented by State Bar Antitrust and Business Litigation Section
· Louise Hytken, received Outstanding Texas Tax Lawyer, presented by SBOT Tax Section
· Daniel Jude Kelly, of Energy Future Holdings Corp., received Corporate Counsel Pro Bono Award, presented by Texas Access to Justice Commission
· Courtney Barksdale Perez, of Carter Scholer Arnett Hamada Mockler, received Joseph M. Pritchard Inn Outstanding Director Award, presented by Texas Young Lawyers Association
· Anne K. Shuttee, of Law Office of Anne Shuttee, received Outstanding Service Award, presented by SBOT Collaborative Law Section
